OpenServerless is an open source, cloud-agnostic, serverless platform. It
offers a complete environment for serverless applications development, based
on Kubernetes. With Apache OpenWhisk as its FaaS engine, it provides an
unified developer experience with a plethora of services (SQL or noSQL
databases, key-value stores, object storage, LLMs services, function
schedulers) managed by the platform's core: the operator, along with tooling
(the CLI) to simplify (and interact with) deployments, integrated ide and
starter application and optimized runtimes integrated with the staters.
OpenServerless has been incubating since 2024-06-17.
### Three most important unfinished issues to address before graduating:
 1. Community Building.
 2. Consolidation and alignment of the documentation site project.
 3. The verification of the requirements for the first release is still
underway: the project has undergone a series of changes based on community
 requests.
### Are there any issues that the IPMC or ASF Board need to be aware of?
 None
### How has the community developed since the last report?
 - After completing the first course, a second course is being implemented
focusing on modern AI topics according to the serverless paradigm.
 - Opened a Discord server with over 300 users.
 - Updated the tutorial [OpenServerless
 Tutorial](https://github.com/apache/openserverless-tutorial).
 - We are trying to bring the product closer to the user: infact, based on
community requests, we have created a version of OpenServerless called
"mini", capable of running on desktop systems by scaling down the RAM and
CPU requirements, but preserving all the components for local development
(from the OpenWhisk controller to the vector database, streamer, runtimes,
database, etc.) and installable with one single command. Documented on
 Apache OpenServerless website.
 - Recently we published two articles about Apache OpenServerless on
 [Opensource.net](https://opensource.net).
### How has the project developed since the last report?
 - 24 issues closed since last update. There are about 30 open tasks,
divided between additional features (for which community support is
required), bug fixes and new features.
 - We have spent several efforts in trying to simplify the setup and make
 it easier and more understandable.
 - We are aiming to refactor the operator, to make it modular.
 - Another important challenge is to make OpenServerless task scripts
 completely cross-platform as well.

Comments: No official release yet and users are being encouraged to
download via a bit.ly link that loads the app from OpenServerless'
GitHub repo. I don't think that this should go on indefinitely.

 1. Strengthen the community
 2. Assess the requirements for the First Release
 3. continue the process of documenting the entire platform.
### Are there any issues that the IPMC or ASF Board need to be aware of?
 No
### How has the community developed since the last report?
 1. The Apache OpenServerless and AI course - currently in Italian - was
completed by at least a couple hundred developers and some of them are
 using actively the platform.
 2. The AI course is being extended to support also MCP api.
 3. Two new contributors joined the projects.
 4. We're in the process of release some videos to show installation on
 local machines and cloud servers.
 5. We've published an article on the
 [Opensource.net](https://opensource.net/apache-openserverless-is-the-easiest
 -way-to-build-your-cloud-native-ai-application/) blog.
### How has the project developed since the last report?
 1. We improved various parts of the project, fixing bugs and reviewed the
 documentation.
 2. Closed 19 issues. Opened 6 new issues.
 3. Improved the OpenServerless streamer (openserverless-streamer),
 introducing new code and documentation.
 4. Preparing an upgrade to OpenWhisk 2.
 5. We have opened a new PR towards the Apache OpenWhisk project to
 support JDK17 based builds.
 6. We have added a new openserverless-build project with the objective of
preparare OpenWhisk 2 multiplatform images tailor made for our project and
we aim to provide a native executable for the standalone component, with
the objective of providing a lighter development environment.

 1. The Apache OpenServerless and AI course - currently in Italian - is
underway: it has involved many people and is a model to be proposed
also in English with respect to a larger community.
 2. We're evaluating sessions to support those who need it in the
    installation of the development environment.
 3. Finally, we are trying to involve people in the development by
proposing them to take charge of some open tasks on GitHub.
### How has the project developed since the last report?
 1. Closed 8 issues. Opened 3 new issues.
 2. We improved the Kubernetes operator, further optimizing the image
size and introducing some new features.
 3. Introduced some new features also in the openserverless-task project.
 4. We improved the stability of the functions that affect the Apache
    OpenServerlesss IDE

 3. Assess the requirements for the First Release
### Are there any issues that the IPMC or ASF Board need to be aware of?
 No
### How has the community developed since the last report?
 1. We tried, through posts on various social networks, to give visibility
 to the project

 Apache OpenServerless and IA.
 3. Started a Discord channel to support people learning OpenServerless
 with the AI course
### How has the project developed since the last report?
 1. The porting from the community version of Nuvolaris has been completed
 2. We have therefore focused on making the system stable, making the CLI
more robust and the openserverless-tasks sub-project that collects the
automation and integration scripts more organic
 3. We have brought the test suite to verify the functioning of the
Kubernetes operator on all supported versions (k3s, k8s, docker, aks, eks,
 gks, openshift)
 4. We have published the site with the official documentation and made
 various updates to it
